Classic Car Club Manhattan held the final Gears on the Pier edition of 2024 on a crisp November Saturday morning. It might be one of the last for the series overall before CCC relocates to a former Toyota dealership in Hell’s Kitchen. Having done now 16 of them, it’s quite an impressive run for the single marque/theme morning car meetup.

This time it was BMW’s M performance division in the spotlight. There was a flood of M5s, both classic and contemporary. Watching roll in, it was interesting to see the evolution of BMW styling from the formal round headlights and small kidney grilles to today’s rather overly complicated surfaces and conflicting proportions.

I personally like the early E28s and there were a few pristine examples that showed up. It can be complicated to follow the many iterations of the M5 so BMW created a nice scroll-thru timeline charting the evolution from the ’85 E28 through the 2024 G90.
