New York’s Soho Design District wasn’t immune to the Covid-19 downturn. A few longtime showrooms have abandoned the area since 2019. However, Danish furniture icon Carl Hansen & Søn recently opened their first consumer-oriented showroom in NYC as the virus appears to be in retreat and restrictions begin to lift.
The new flagship showroom is located within an open and airy ground floor space at 150 Wooster Street near Houston. Furniture vignettes are scattered around the interior to encourage browsing and reduce any intimidation of trying out a chair or sofa.
With a history spanning back to the beginning of the 20th century, one of the most interesting takeaways from a visit here is how classic and modern pieces are freely mixed together. On one hand it shows the longevity of Danish design. It also shows a manufacturer with a very consistent vision of what should represent good design. This comes down to carefully seeking out designers to work with that compliment that vision. It’s a real challenge to walk the showroom floor and try to identify what’s classic and what’s new.
