A perfect permanent exhibition for next expansion wing?
For car nerds, the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles is a magical place. Bring together a huge collection of sci-fi movie and TV show vehicles for a dedicated exhibition and that requires some kind of new definition of nerdom. Hollywood Dream Machines: Vehicles of Science Fiction and Fantasy presented a broad and deep range of cars, trucks and things that hover. Beyond the obvious Batmobile and Delorean inclusions were a host of vehicles from Mad Max and Blade Runner (both the original and 2049).
Notable was the increased level of detail that’s included in contemporary movie cars verses examples from the 1960s or ’70s. There’s lots to pour over in the interiors of the vehicles from Mad Max and Blade Runner 2049 that probably had at most a couple seconds of screen time.
My speedy roam around the Petersen also included seeing VW’s Building An Electric Future exhibit and the Disruptors show that included many of Joey Ruiter incredible vehicle designs. It was a bit of a shame that the walls of the Disruptors room were painted black, the same color as most of Joey’s vehicles. Not great conditions for photography at least.
